As a core member of the Human Resources (HR) Operational Services in Payroll, you will deliver HR service assistance to the HR community, business managers and employees. You will process complex and escalated HR requests related to multiple service lines for an assigned group of employees. In this role, you will be managing a team of individuals responsible for end-to-end Payroll delivery of 18,000 US and Puerto Rico (PR) employees (union and non-union) using two payroll systems, SAP and Workday, and five time keeping systems that integrate with SAP and Workday. The role works with vendors, Payroll Time, HR, IS and other business units to share best practices, deliver projects, and facilitate lessons learned. In addition, the role sets deadlines and effectively coordinates activities to deliver objectives. The role also drives process improvements and assists in the evaluation and redesign of processes and technical solutions. This position requires the ability to work a hybrid schedule (3 days in the office and 2 days remotely) from our Cary, NC facility.

Your responsibilities

  • Ensures that US/PR payroll services are delivered in accordance with all ABB policy directives and in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations
  • Proposes and implements the strategic direction of the US/PR Payroll Services organization
  • Champions ABB core values and LEAN initiatives
  • Provides subject matter expertise related to payroll operations
  • Researches and interprets federal and state regulatory requirements to resolve issues for payroll processing
  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions, payroll time processing including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, fringe benefits, imputed income and other deductions
  • Contributes expertise to local and global projects with responsibility for assigned Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and deliverables
  • Drives implementation of streamlined practices and processes across areas of responsibility which will result in cost reduction, improved internal control, process efficiency and excellent customer satisfaction
  • Participates in quarterly and annual audits with ABB's Internal & External Auditors. Ensures informational requests are documented, information is provided and issues are clearly identified and resolved
  • Governs compliance with ABB policies, FLSA regulations, wage and tax laws, segregation of duties, SOX and other federal and state legislation affecting payroll
  • Builds strong working relationships with various cross-functional groups and partners with other stakeholders regarding policy and pay impacting changes
  • Builds and maintains effective vendor relationships
  • Develops and delivers communications affecting payroll policy changes and escalations
  • Reviews and approves payroll runs, system testing results, and payroll impacting policy changes
  • Manages escalations and delivers timely resolutions to complex payroll inquiries
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
  • Facilitates a respectful work environment
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned
  • Ensures team members provide excellent customer service to employees by offering individuals information on payments and by responding accurately and timely to payroll related requests.
  • Builds strong working relationships with various cross-functional groups throughout Human Resources/other stakeholders to understand customer needs and deliver exceptional customer service
  • Provides feedback/train/customer facing teams to equip them with knowledge to respond to customer requests
  • Creates awareness/train/guide employees (as applicable) on self service capability/usage at every opportunity
  • Reviews customer feedback, analyses it, and guide team members on it regularly
  • Manages a team of individuals that supports the ABB US/PR model for payroll services
  • Recruits, develops, and retains talented team members
  • Assists with resource allocation and resolution of resource conflicts
  • Coaches and guides team members on complex queries to help develop their process knowledge
  • Holds periodic one-on-ones and identifies training needs in alignment with development of team members
  • Identifies critical roles in teams and ensures backup availability through cross-training and skill development
  • Conducts annual performance/salary review of team members
  • Designs, recommends, and implements processes to improve the controls, efficiency, and quality of Payroll
  • Drives a mindset of continuous improvement by encouraging team members to constantly challenge the status-quo (especially processes that are manual/repetitive)
  • Defines metrics to measure and monitors process effectiveness and compliance
  • Supports financial and cost management to ensure alignment with the approved budget
Your background

  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of payroll including time experience (inclusive of 2+ years leading a team) or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Experience supporting payroll operations for an organization with at least 5K employees
  • Workday and/or SAP payroll module experience preferred
  • Experience in a shared services environment and SAAS Systems
  • Knowledge of HR practices, laws, policies and procedures
  • Hands-on experience with multi-state and multi-company payroll
  • Exceptional analytical, communication and leadership skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Excel and other MS Office applications
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt well to changing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Strong detail orientation and time management skills
  • Professional demeanor and strong executive presence
  • Must maintain confidential information discreetly and protect employee privacy
  • Previous experience managing teams
  • CPP certification and ADP experience
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
